A Message from the Head Teacher

Welcome to the official website of Sighthill Primary School which has been developed by parents and friends of the school with support from Family Learning. I hope you enjoy the site as much as we do. Here is just a little information for you about the school.

Sighthill Primary School is a small, happy school where children are encouraged to achieve well and be the best they can be.

It is a non-denominational school built in 1968 which serves the community of the Calders area of south-west Edinburgh.  Housing in the catchment area is mainly council properties.  The school is part of the Wester Hailes cluster and receives additional funding from the authority as part of the Positive Action strategy.

The school building includes a large gym hall, a small dining hall, a library, a computer suite, a music/art room, a breakfast club room and a support for learning room. The school has extensive playgrounds and large grass fields.

The current school roll is 158 pupils plus 36 pupils in the nursery.  There are 7 classes in the school.  I took up my post as headteacher in August 2006 and I  have no teaching commitment. I am supported by a principal teacher who has 0.5 ICT teaching commitment.  There is a Support for Learning teacher, a visiting music specialist, a visiting art specialist and an EAL teacher who comes ½ a day a week.  We have a school forum and a parents’ council.

We are very fortunate at Sighthill to have a staff who are all very committed to the welfare of the children and success of the school. Early in the session there is an opportunity for you to meet your child’s class teacher and visit the classroom informally. Twice a session we have parent consultations when you have the opportunity to meet your child’s class teacher and discuss her/his progress. You are also able to arrange other meetings if you have particular questions or concerns. Any additional meetings should be arranged through either the headteacher or the principal teacher.
